About the tool
Making music used to require an armada of instruments or years wasted learning digital audio workstations. Udio, developed by Uncharted Labs Inc. and currently running in beta, tackles the problem by turning text prompts, custom lyrics, and audio clips into fully mixed tracks complete with vocals, instrumentation, and arrangements in seconds.
Under the hood, Udio operates on proprietary deep learning audio models capable of understanding musical structure, genre blendings, and harmonic continuity. Much like Suno, the platform allows musicians and creators to generate songs directly from text descriptions and split mixes into separate audio stems. Where Udio carves out its own edge is in its focused studio toolset, giving users surgical control over the final output:
- Lyric drafting and structural control: Write your own verses or let the algorithm auto-generate them. You can direct song architecture using structural markers like `[Verse]`, `[Chorus]`, and `[Drop]`, or flip the switch to pure instrumental mode.
- Consistent Voices and Playground: Audition singer styles inside the dedicated Playground, then lock in vocal profiles using Consistent Voices so the same singer timbre carries across an entire project or EP.
- Surgical audio editing: Use Inpainting to regenerate awkward vocal segments or flubbed chords without re-rolling the entire song. The Extend function lets you lengthen tracks forward or backward, building out compositions segment by segment.
- Remixing and style blending: Upload your own audio files to use as sonic references, blend disparate genres, or crank up the variance parameter to produce wild variations of an existing draft.
- Stem separation and cover art: Split completed tracks into individual stems (such as vocals, drums, bass, and instruments) for mixing in external software, and generate or upload custom album covers.
Udio operates on a freemium model. The free tier gives you 100 credits per month (capped at 10 credits daily) and lets you generate up to 4 songs at once, with a ceiling of 3 full-length 2:10 tracks per day. Upgrading to Standard ($10/month for 2,400 credits) or Pro ($30/month for 6,000 credits) removes the daily song cap, boosts concurrent generations up to 10 tracks, and unlocks audio file uploads alongside deeper voice control.
